Ben Carson: Talking Out of Both Sides of His Mouth

As Dr. Ben Carson inches his way closer to a 2016 run for President, he’s trying desperately to sound like the grown up in the room, but he just can’t pull it off. After calling the veterans’ healthcare crisis “a gift from God”, Carson had this to say on (where else?) Fox News:

“We need seriousness here rather than just political speak. ‘How can I look better? How can my party look better?’ And I’m saying this to both Democrats and Republicans: Stop, and think about the people.”

Well, let’s look at Carson’s Romneyesque attitude towards “the people”:
He likened homosexuality to pedophilia and bestiality, then claimed his words were taken “completely taken out of context and completely misunderstood”. He also thinks:

“…gay people should have the same rights as everyone else, but they don’t get extra rights.”

(One of the most nonsensical talking points on the right, having what other Americans take for granted every day would be “extra rights” for gays.) He has said:

“Nobody is starving on the streets. We’ve always taken care of them.”

Then turns around and takes the usual conservative position that the struggling poor are lazy:

When you rob someone of their incentive to go out there and improve themselves, you are not doing them any favors. When you take somebody and pat them on the head and say, ‘There, there, you poor little thing. … Let me give you housing subsidies, let me give you free health care because you can’t do that’…”

Such compassion. Of course,  like Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan, Carson and his family were recipients of government aid, but that’s because they really needed it. As McClatchy DC reported:

Carson, in his book, tells how his grades improved tremendously when a government program provided him with free eyeglasses because he could barely see. Not only that, in “Gifted Hands” we read this nugget: “By the time I reached ninth grade, mother had made such strides that she received nothing but food stamps. She couldn’t have provided for us and kept up the house without that subsidy.”
He writes elsewhere, “As I’ve said, we received food stamps and couldn’t have made it without them.”

But you other poor people, you’re just moochers.

Carson has said men need to “re-educate the women” so they wouldn’t get so “riled up” over abortion and their own reproductive rights. Maybe they could give Todd Akin that assignment… or Richard Mourdock… maybe even Rick Santorum. Knuckle Draggers educating us… too funny.

Carson called Cliven Bundy and his supporters “pretty outstanding people“; of  course that was before he knew the first thing about Bundy, who subsequently had this to say about “the Negro”:

“I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy?”

Then again, Dr. Carson himself has insulted blacks, claiming they voted for Obama based on race, as Bankole Thompson noted in the Michigan Chronicle:

[Carson] said African American support for President Obama has little to do with vetting the president’s actual policies, but rather the roots of oppression of Blacks.
“It’s created by a long history of oppression and they’re very proud (of Obama) and that pride trumps rational thinking. I totally understand it, but I’m hoping at some point a more rational thought process will take over,” Carson said of Black voters.

I wonder, by rational thought does he mean voting for those good ol’ white boys who are disenfranchising black voters all over the country?

The good doctor has called Obamacare: “the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery”, and declared: “We live in a Gestapo age… We’re very much like Nazi Germany.” (Because everything they don’t like is slavery or the holocaust to Conservatives)

Carson displayed an utter lack of respect for a sitting President in order to score political points at the National Prayer Breakfast; but it got him his Republican “street creds”, and he’s been all puffed up and proud of having shown his ass ever since. So much for his being above “political speak”.

As Kirsten West Savali at News One put it:

“… Dr. Carson — in his stigmatization, sexism, misogyny and homoantagonism — has attacked many of the usual suspects who are targets of conservative rage.

He is trafficking in white supremacy in Blackface and there is little doubt that his political future is assured. Don’t be surprised if he tackles immigration and guns next.”

Does Ben Carson have a shot at the Republican nomination in 2016, sure he does; but I’m pretty sure this brilliant jackass will flame out as he continues to put his political foot in his mouth. Besides, getting the nomination is one thing; it’s doing a verbal 180 thereafter to try and con the American people into voting for you that’s the tricky part… just ask Mitt Romney.
